The Doctor's Moon
Santa Fe's economy relies heavily on tourism. Twenty or so miles outside of Santa Fe, on the Pecos Highway, is a large Baptist retreat. A certain amount of strain exists between residents of Santa Fe and the retreat; some feeling the retreat "dumps" hundreds of skiers into the Santa Fe ski areas without contributing to the local economy.
In the study of a prominent Santa Fe physician is a startling painting. If pressed the doctor will explain that the painting, done by another prominent Santa Fe physician, portrays an incident that the doctor considers a salient point in his life, second only to his graduation from medical school. The painting depicts this incident in shocking minute detail.
It seems the two doctors were driving the Pecos Highway when they came upon a Baptist bus headed toward Santa Fe with all passengers decked out for skiing. Without even a second thought, as they passed the bus, the doctor rolled down his window, dropped his pants and "mooned" the bus. The bus driver was so startled he forgot what he was doing and ran the bus into the ditch.
